My Gear

The stuff I use to make my cartoons and videos.

I’m frequently asked what I draw with or what my video setup is so here is a roundup of the hardware and software I use.

Illustration Gear:

iMac Pro (2018)

For illustration this is overkill and over priced. For video it's fantastic and a huge time saver. the only thing on this I don't like are the speakers.

iPad Pro and Apple Pencil

When I want to sketch or just have fun I usually grab the iPad Pro. Over time I've been able to move more and more of my workflow to it even though at first it seemed pretty clunky. Affinity Designer really helped in that regard.

Cintiq Pro 24

I have this mounted on my desk but I don't use it as much as I want to. Mostly because I'm always testing out new displays and reinstalling drivers when I want to draw is a pain in the butt. Still love it though.

Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator

Photoshop is kinda laggy to draw in on the Surface Pro with larger files but I’ve used it for years and I know it like the back of my hand. I also have a great brush collection that makes it hard to break away completely from drawing in Photoshop. I love Adobe Illustrator. I’ve searched for alternatives, but I have yet to find anything I like nearly as much.

Clip Studio

Clip studio has a lot of features and does some great things but for me there is one thing that puts it head and shoulders above other drawing apps and that’s the way it handles inking. They do some auto smoothing to the brushes which just works perfectly. It’s great for my cartooning style. I don't use it as much as I used to.

Video Gear:

Cannon EOS 80D

I used my iPhone 6 for years to film my videos but I officially upgraded to the Cannon. It's sooooo much better.

Mic: Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB

This is the second mic I've had and I love it. A friend recommended it and it's only $60. The quality and price is better than the old Blu Yeti mic I used to use. I have a little do-dad that lets me plug it into my phone to record the audio and video together. Now I plug it into my computer and record my audio separately from video and sync them up in production.

Zomei Z818 Professional Camera Tripod

Not the highest end tripod but it's solid and gets the job done. I mainly wanted something that let me shoot straight down while holding my camera's weight and this does that well.

Lighting: LimoStudio 700W Photography Softbox Light

These work. They are kinda large. I don't even use the big shades on them anymore. They will also be the next thing I replace. I want to get something that takes up less space. Maybe install a more permanent light behind my head, but these lights have done ok the last two years.

iRig: IK Multimedia iRig PRE

I used to record on my iPhone and I used this to connect my mic to the phone so it could directly capture the audio. It was pretty handy.

GripTight Mount XL for Large Smartphones

This is the clamp I use to connect my phone to my the tripod. It has a spring in it so it can expand to fit any size phone. Probably won't fit the iPhone 6 plus, but the standard iPhone 6 fits it just fine even with the case on.
